What’s Mine is Yours

Last week I went along to one of my favourite fashion events – and a guilt-free alternative to Fashion Week – a clothing swap.

Hosted by GreenUps and the Sydney arm of The Clothing Exchange , the event was held in the wonderfully inspiring rehearsal and creative spaces of Opera Australia.

Before the swap began, I said a few words to the gathered and eager throng of clothing recyclers about what to avoid – and some things they should always remember – when diving in to the swapping fray:

DON’T

1. Swap one fashion disaster for another – think about why you chose your selection & the reasons others will have done the same: too small, too big, wrong colour, wrong shape, too dated?

2. Take it just because it’s a label – just because ‘it’s Lacroix sweetie’, doesn’t mean it’s stylish, still in fashion (or ever coming back) or actually right for you

3. Think it’s going to fit if it doesn’t fit right now – whilst there are some amazing alterations specialists out there that can take up hems and adjust waistlines for you, the garment still has to basically fit, suit you, and be of sufficient quality e.g. a vintage or designer find, to warrant this kind of extra effort and outlay

DO

1. Remember the right shape & length for your body type – just because it’s free does not mean the normal rules of style and appropriateness do not apply

2. Stick with colours that suit you – as above and just as important

3. Take a risk & have fun – now could be the chance to snap up that red dress or jacket you never have the guts to spend money on but always wanted, or to try out a printed blouse if you usually play safe and stick to plains

A great time was had by all – after nearly an hour of intense swapping there was hardly anything left – and I was super happy to come away with the gift of a strapless white & navy polka dot cotton sundress from Zara, which I shall put to good use back in Barcelona this coming summer (and all without having to queue LOL)…

Happy swapping!!

PS. the next Green Drinks will be held on 7th of June  & next Clothing Exchange in Sydney is on 12th May, with their once a year Vintage swap happening on the 23rd of June…
